We have become so dependent on these technologies and luxury items in our daily rushed routines that we fail to realise the threats these items could posing to our health. Here we have 10 items we use regularly on a daily basis which has harmful effects if used for a long term.
1. Microwave Oven
The most commonly used home appliance for quick heating our food can be dangerous. The plastic containers that we use to heat our food in release certain chemicals on being heated which seep into our food and can cause cancer. Therefore, it is better to use ceremic containers or heat-resistant glass containers.
2. Air Freshners
Room Freshners are used in almost every modern home to get rid of bad smell without realising that room freshners contain a chemical, phthalates that are used in plastic softeners, paints and anti-foaming agents. This chemical is known to harm the reproductive health of males effecting the amount of testosterone produced in their bodies.
3. Hair Dryers
While hair dryers give you great looking blow-dried hair instantly, the excess heat and dry air can cause the hair follicles to damage permanently leading to hair loss as well as split ends if used much frequently.
4. Nail Tools
Nail tools need to be properly cleaned after being used as bacteria and germs can transfer from your skin and grow on it. Using the same tools again without cleaning may cause skin infections.
While a loofah may seem like the best option to have a great exfoliating and refreshing bath, it may even cause skin diseases. An undried loofah may house millions of germs and bacteria that got transferred from your skin and the moist conditions favoured its growth.
6. Cotton Earbuds
Frequent and vigorous use of cotton earbuds maybe fun and give relief but can also damage your eardrums causing partial or complete loss of hearing aid.
Many sunscreen brands claim to provide complete sun-protection from UV rays, which may all be infact untrue. Sunscreens contain Oxybenzone and Vitamin-A as retinyl Palmitate that can cause hormone disruption and cancer respectively. Therefore, it advisable to switch to mineral sunscreens which do not get absorbed in the skin.
8. Non-stick cookware
Non-stick cookwares are found to contain harmful chemicals such as Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) which is used to manufacture Teflon cookware. This chemical is released on being heated and can cause cancer.
9. Ready-to-eat foods
Packed foods have rather very high content of sodium and preservatives that not only diminish the nutritional value of the food but are also harmful for our health.
10. Moth balls
Moth balls in India find a permanent place in winter clothes and wash basins, however, these tiny white balls contain naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene which are insecticides. Excessive exposure to these chemicals can cause harmful effects no our nervous system, eyes and skin.
