Known as the Nawab of Najafgarh, Virendra Sehwag is one of those cricketers who hits a six first then settles down- as said by Anil Kumble. Turnning 37 today, India’s best opener till date denied reports about his earlier announced retirement from International Cricket.
“No matter how good and experienced you are, he can kill your attitude” – Brett Lee on Virender Sehwag.
We can’t agree more.. Virendra Sehwag is known for his fearless attitude on the field and his witty sense of humour among the mightiest of bowlers. He is known for his 16000+ runs in International Cricket and his brilliant triple century marked with a smashing six at a test series. Out of many witty instances here are five epic moments from Viru’s life on the field.
1. Favorite Food
Being one of the richest and wittiest cricketer Viru said in an interview that he has always been a Momma’s Boy and so he loves ‘Kheer’ made by his mom.
2. Nicknames and Records
We know Sehwag being called Viru commonly but he is also known by other names such as “Nawab of Najafgarh” and “Sultan of Multan” following his triple century in Multan, Pakistan. Also, very few people know him to be called as “Little Tendulkar”
Viru has had an impeccable record throughout his career. He has secured many achievements in his bag and some of them supremely prestigious which include:
a. He is the only batsman along with the great Sir Don Bradman to make 3 test scores more than 290!
b. He is the only batsman in the history to have scored 7,500-plus runs in both Tests & ODIs as an opener.
c. Sehwag won 31 ‘Player of the Match’ awards in Tests & ODIs combined, which are 3rd highest among Indians – top two being Sachin (76) & Ganguly (37).
3. The Funny Guy
Viru has been deemed the funniest guy in the Indian dressing room. On One particular instance when Shoaib Akhtar said to Sehwag “Hook Maar Ke Dikha” Sehwag replied “Bowling Kar Raha Hai Ya Bheekh Maang Raha Hai”. When asked about Mendis once, he said “Bhaisaab spinner ko spinner batsman banata hai ! Agar usse aap ball spin hi naa karne do, aur pahli hi over Mai usse bahar pheink do woh zindgi bhar spin nhi karega” And this is what he thinks about a cricket ball “ball ka ghar hai boundary, usse waha pahunchao”
And well who doesn’t remember the “Baap Baap hota Hai and Beta Beta Hota Hai” incident. Right?
Apart from his love for cricket Sehwag is fond of romantic Hindi film music. Some of his favourite singers are Kishore Kumar, M.D. Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha BHosle, Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu. He is also known to pass his time playing tennis, badminton, table tennis and pool.
Also, have you ever wondered what he would have been if not a cricketer? He would have been in the field of Pharmacy.
5. Got Banned on Debut
Quite shockingly Sehwag on the start of his career faced a ban from umpire Mike Denness for over appealing in a match in which he scored a century against south africa in 2001. But this humble man was destined to be the only Indian Cricketer and the 3rd batsman to have 2 triple centuries in test cricket.
