Supreme Court, India has decided to hold a day-long meeting regarding the taxes to be imposed on the purchase of every new diesel car in India. The determination bench presided over by Chief Justice TS Thakur has decided to take in consideration the issue of levying the green tax over diesel vehicles to reduce the pollution levels in India, especially New Delhi.
Green tax or environmental tax is a tax imposed on environmental pollutants or on goods whose repeated use contributes to pollution.
Earlier, the state government in Kanpur had decided to ban vehicles older than 15 years and charge taxes for the ones operating vehicles leading to increased pollution. Also,Extensive reforms of India’s indirect taxes at the central and the state levels has prepared the necessary ground for the implementation of a comprehensive goods and services tax (GST).
As per, “Human health risk assessment for diesel exhaust” report, the diesel exhaust could cause lung cancer, adverse respiratory, cardiovascular and immunological impacts. Besides, diesel exhaust has been directly linked to bladder cancer, adverse reproductive and developmental effects and adverse central nervous system effects. While maintaining that “there is no safe level for diesel exhaust”, Minjares suggested that the Canada government’s report be shared with the SC on April 30.
However, it is yet to be decided as to ho much tax would be imposed on each diesel car buyer!
