Women’s stories have always been a fulfilling watch. Not merely films but these have been helmed by coveted women filmmakers, precisely women telling women’s stories. There are tons of other female-centric ones directed by female filmmakers that are just as great. From The Edge of Seventeen to Portrait of a Lady on Fire, here are this week’s recommendation to bring watch stories that showcase instances, life events, and experiences.
‘The Edge of Seventeen’ (2016)
Kelly Fremon’s most realistic teen pictures out there, Craig’s story of adolescence with Hailee Steinfeld (who gives one of her best performances) has many young ladies relating to Nadine’s awful high school experience.
‘American Honey’ (2016)
American Honey, an underrated A24 gem, follows Sasha Lane’s Star, a disobedient adolescent who escapes her troubled home with a travelling sales crew. Star finds her own place among the gang of misfits and participates in the group’s unconventional (and dubious) lifestyle.
Babadook (2014)
The Babadook, directed by Jennifer Kent, is an exceptional feature film that tells the story of a struggling widow (Essie Davis), who learns that the monster stories her son has been talking about are real.
‘The Virgin Suicides’ (1999)
The Virgin Suicides, which is directed by Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter Sofia and has unquestionably established herself in the business, is based on the same-titled book by Jeffrey Eugenides. It centers on the five mysterious and tragic Lisbon sisters, who are the obsession of numerous neighboring guys.
Raw (2016)
The expertly created Raw centers on Justine (Garance Marillier), a vegetarian 17-year-old who finds a new, merciless, and dangerously alluring world during her first week of veterinary school.
‘Daughters of the Dust’ (1991)
One of the most revolutionary movies made by and about women is Daughters of the Dust. Three generations of Gullah women are depicted living on the South Carolina Sea Islands in the year 1902.
‘Little Women’ (2019)
This Greta Gerwig-directed movie, which is based on Louisa May Alcott’s novel of the same name, reinvents the well-known classic by focusing on the lives of the four March sisters, each of whom has quite different goals and a distinct personality.
‘Jeanne Dielman’ (1975)
In this Chantal Akerman drama from 1975, Delphine Seyrig plays the widowed mother of a teenage boy named Sylvain (Jan Decorte). She spends her days performing menial household tasks like grocery shopping, cooking, and housework in addition to her sporadic prostitution work, which keeps her financially afloat.
‘Vagabond’ (1985)
Agnès Varda, a pioneer of the French New Wave, wrote and directed the deeply moving drama picture Vagabond, which follows the journey of an independent young woman (Sandrine Bonnaire) as she moves from place to place, working odd jobs and staying with whoever would have her.
‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ (2019)
Adèle Haenel plays the young daughter of a French countess in Céline Sciamma’s historical drama Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which is set in 1770 and centers on their passionate love affair. Noémie Merlant is the artist hired to create her wedding portrait.
