For thousands of years roads have provided a means for safer and more efficient movement of goods and people, but as you will see in a moment this is not always the case. While some of the roads on our list are heavily traveled thoroughfares others are remote, winding, and narrow. Whatever the case may be though, the 10 most dangerous roads in the world will likely convince you that walking isn’t really that bad after all.

1. Atlantic Ocean Road

It is located on the coastal edge of Norway. It is just over 5 miles long. While the road has been listed in numerous magazines and books as the world’s best place to take a road trip. It is also one of the more dangerous roads if you are not careful. If your car runs off the road, it immediately crashes into the ocean. Waves are constantly hitting, increasing risks of being swept off the road.

2. James Dalton Highway

Located in Northeren Alaska, this road is not for anyone who is a new driver. The highway is 414 miles long and is mainly used to ship oil that is a flammable substance. The roads are icy, flying rocks can hit the car and the driver can lose visibility in a matter of seconds. People who rent a car are prohibited on this road.
3. Eshima Ohashi Bridge

The bridge is located in Japan. It is only about a mile long but the gradient of this road will amaze you. It is known as the roller coaster road. It is one of the steeper bridges in the world. It was built so high so that the fishing boats could pass safely.

4. The Himalayan Road

It is mainly located in India. It is regarded as the highest road in the world with an altitude of about 11,578 feet. There is only one lane and is made of crumbling dirt. One wrong turn and you will skid off the cliff.

This road is located in Norway. The incline is very steep and the curves are so tight that you cannot afford to make a wrong turn. The roads are so narrow that vehicles bigger than 40 feet are not allowed on this road.

This is located in New Zealand. The narrow road has dangerous cliffs that are waiting to welcome your vehicle into its deathly drops. If a vehicle comes from the opposite direction, there really isn’t any place to move over to let them pass. Rental car insurance do not cover this road.

Located in Italy, this is a 15-mile long road with 48 hairpin turns with 180 degrees in some areas! The highest part of this road is at 9000 feet. The road is only open from June to September, since driving on the pass during bad weather is basically a death sentence.

8. Sichuan-Tibet Highway

This is located in China. It records 7500 deaths in every 100,000 people that drive on it every year. The highway is vulnerable to rock slides, avalanches and hazardous conditions due to poor weather.

9. BR-116

This road is located in Brazil and is also known as the Highway of Death. It is the second longest road in the country. The maintenance of this road is so bad that it has caused numerous accidents that has lead to thousands of deaths. The road is also prone to attacks from thieves and bandits.

10. North Yungas Road

It is also known as the Death Road. It is located in Bolivia. Each year about 200-300 travellers are killed on this road. The road stretches to about 42 miles and is littered with crosses in memory of those who have lost their lives. In 1995, it was named the “Most Dangerous Road in the World”.
