15 teens in a rural Moroccan town have been treated for rabies after raping an infected local donkey. Moreover, it was claimed that the actual number infected could be a lot higher as many parents took their children outside the particular area to avoid shame.
The treatment was done in the Mechraa Belksiri Hospital for one week and now the local authorities are trying to find anyone else who has established any kind of contact with the donkey to avoid the further spread of disease.
The families of the fifteen young people are said to have reacted in “distress and horror” after being mocked throughout the small town.
Rabies In Morocco
Rabies is present on all continents except Antarctica. The majority of human infections occur in Asia and Africa. The virus attacks the Central Nervous System targeting the brain and the spinal cord, and if untreated is fatal. It is also usually caught from the bite or scratch of an infected animal, most often a dog.
