This film series is based on the epic novel by the English writer J.R.R. Tolkien, the films do not lose their relevance today. Even after multiple views, it’s always a pleasure to return to the world with cute hobbits, incredible elves, and scary orcs.
Any fantasy anime from Studio Ghibli
Any of Hayao Miyazaki’s works deserve to be included in the best fantasy selection, so it’s easier to include them all. What anime do you like the most? “My Neighbor Totoro” or “Princess Mononoke”? “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds” or “Laputa Heavenly Castle”?
The seventh seal
Chances are, you’ve seen scenes from ‘The Seventh Seal’ at least. Especially one of the most famous scenes in the history of cinema, where the knight Antonius Blok plays chess with Death. The Seventh Seal is a beautiful classic by Ingmar Bergman and is definitely worth watching at least once in your life.
Pan’s Labyrinth
The story of Ophelia, a princess who cannot find her way back to the underworld and must complete three tasks of a terrible faun. Sergi Lopez plays Captain Vidal, an officer in Franco’s army, whom Ophelia’s mother married. Even though there are many fantasy monsters in the film, it is Captain Vidal who is the scariest of them all. This is a dark, cruel and unforgettable modern fairy tale.
NeverEnding story
The film perfectly conveys the magic inherent in fantasy books. It still looks just wonderful and is perfect for viewing with children. There is a lot of fun and adventure in Neverending Story, but it is a little sad at times and brings up difficult topics.
