61 children have lost their lives at the BRD Medical College Hospital in Gorakhpur in the last 72 hours. The incident comes only a few weeks after an alleged disruption in oxygen supply resulted in deaths of over 60 children.
25 children had died in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), 25 in the general pediatric ward and 11 children died in in the encephalitis ward. The deaths were due to pneumonia, encephalitis, sepsis and health complexities in newborns.
Unfortunately, according to the doctors, the number of deaths are likely to increase in the upcoming days due to floods and water logging (caused by heavy rainfall) which promote the spread of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES).
As per reported by the Hindustan Times, Dr. R N Singh, a pediatrician, said:
“Insufficient homework was done to control the outspread of AES in January, and thereafter the entire machinery remained busy in the UP elections. Secondly, heavy monsoon also accounts for a large number of cases among children.”
Meanwhile, the news coincided with the former principal of the government (Dr. Rajiv Mishra)- run BRD medical college in Gorakhpur Rajiv Mishra and his wife (Purnima Shukla) were arrested from Kanpur in connection with the death of over 60 children admitted between August 7 and 11.
