Journalists are those people who bring a change in the society by exposing the truth. Journalism is the biggest power that can turn a zenith into nadir or vice versa. Take the example of Panama Papers which has shaken almost every major nation. On contrary, in India journalists are getting murdered for exposing the truth to the public. The recent murder of Gauri Lankesh proved that our system is failing to deliver justice. Are these the Acche Din every Indian was seeking for?
Gauri Lankesh is not the first journalist who was murdered for speaking out the truth, history is the proof that India has a long dark record in such cases. You will get shocked to know that since 1992, 64 journalists had been killed till 2017. Here is the list of prominent cases that grabbed the headlines.
1) Ram Chander Chhatrapati
Gurmeet Ram Rahim is in jail now for 20 years. But do you know the man who is responsible for his conviction? It’s Ram Chander Chhatrapati. He was the first to publish the anonymous letters accusing Gurmeet Ram Rahim of charges of which he is now found guilty. In the year 2002, on October 14, he was shot dead by two motor cyclists.
2) Rajdev Ranjan
He was a journalist for Hindustan Daily in Siwan, Bihar. He exposed former Rashtriya Janata Dal MP, Mohammad Shahabuddin who was convicted of the murder of two brothers. Ranjan was shot dead by bike borne attackers. His murder shocked the nation.
3) Narendra Dabholkar
Narendra was against the religious leaders who used to spread blind following amongst people. He was shot dead by two youth who fired 3 round on him in his hometown, Pune.
4) MM Kalburgi
The journalist who threatened the religion oriented politics that was gifting NDA unprecedented wins all over India. He was shot dead by an unidentified gunman at his place in August 2015.
5) Sandeep Kothari
He was exposing the illegal mining and land grabbing scam. Therefore, was murdered in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh.
6) Jagendra Singh
He dared to take on the mighty minister Rammurti Singh Verma in UP was burnt to death by his opponent. On 8 June 2015, he died in Shahjahanpur of Uttar Pradesh.
7) Govind Pansare
He was the senior CPI leader who was murdered under mysterious circumstances in 2015. His views that are against the right wing politics led to his death. He was shot dead in Kolhapur while having a morning walk on February 16 with his wife.
8) Gauri Lankesh
Gauri Lankesh was shot down by motorcycle-borne assailants at the gate of her house in Rajeshwari Nagar on the outskirts of Bengaluru. She was killed for writing about the failures of her own government awarded her the most heinous award, death.
