There are eight colonies where flats have been allotted to the victims, including the Tilak Vihar widow colony, where there are more than 1,000 such flats. The other colonies are Garhi, Raghubir Nagar, Sangam Park, Jahangir Puri, GT Road Shahdara, Kalkaji and Madipur.

Kejriwal has directed the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board to immediately begin the repair work in these colonies. The decision to repair at least 2,000 flats in the localities was taken at a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister and attended by the heads of various departments of the state government, said an official statement.Slamming Kejriwal’s move, Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay said the Chief Minister should stop playing political gimmicks. “Most of the victims live in rented houses. Instead of issuing a baseless statement, the Chief Minister should construct houses for the victims,” he said.

Assembly elections in Punjab are slated to be held early next year and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has emerged as one of the main contenders for power in the state.
