New Zealand is now on the move after taking inspiration from their neighbors. Just one day after U.S and Australia went through a major change in their immigration policies, New Zealand did something similar. New Zealand said they are going to tighten immigration rules for skilled workers. New Zealand too has the same motive like Australia and the U.S. They said their first preference is to give jobs to the kiwis then to migrants.
The aim of this whole procedure is to control high levels of migration to New Zealand, keeping in mind the growing concern about housing shortages, road congestion and overcrowding in Auckland, and other major New Zealand cities. In 2016 more than 70,000 people migrated to New Zealand, according to New Zealand statistics, the majority of them choosing to settle in Auckland, now home to nearly 1.5 million people.
New Zealand’s immigration minister Michael Woodhouse said, “The government has a Kiwis-first approach to immigration. It’s important that our immigration settings are attracting the right people, with the right skills, to help fill genuine skill shortages and contribute to our growing economy. That is why we are making a number of changes to our permanent and temporary immigration settings aimed at managing the number, and improving the quality, of migrants coming to New Zealand.”
One after the other every major Country is giving first preference to their citizens. This is definitely a great step towards the development of their citizens. But unfortunately, this step will affect many immigrant dreams. Student and Skilled workers both will get affected after this tightening in immigration policies.
