With the release of Sooryavanshi in 2021, Akshay Kumar was credited with reviving the moviegoing public. However, this perception was altered when Akshay suffered a succession of failures in 2022 and a significant failure with Selfiee in 2023. The actor has since stated in a recent interview that box office failures are a sign that the audience did not connect with the movie, which implies that it is “time for you to change.”
In a conversation with Financial Express, Akshay said, “Of course, they do.” He further mentioned, “We are made or we are broken because of the box office numbers. That’s what you call hits and flops. The audiences tell us when we are right and where we are going wrong, and all that is reflected in the box office numbers because if a film does not work, that means people didn’t come to see it, which in turn means that they didn’t connect to it. And it means that’s the time for you to change.”
In 2022, Akshay Kumar had a spate of failures, including Ram Setu, Cuttputlli, Raksha Bandhan, Samrat Prithviraj, and Bachchhan Paandey. All of these films had poor box office results, while Cuttputlli, which debuted only on OTT, received negative reviews from both reviewers and viewers.
Akshay affirmed that he has witnessed “many cycles of ups and downs in my life”. He mentioned that it is disheartening to see films underperforming yet is “proud of the ability I have to move on extremely quickly”. The actor stated, “What keeps me going is the same will I had on the first day I started work, I love working! And no one can take that away from me. You just have to keep going on, there is no other way.”
The following movie starring Akshay Kumar is OMG 2, which is anticipated to compete at the box office with Gadar 2 and Animal. Additionally, he is working on the third Hera Pheri chapter, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, the Hindi remake of Soorarai Pottru, and other projects.
