Alexei Navalny, an opposition leader against the Russian government, died in prison on Friday. He was seen as one of President Vladimir Putin’s strongest opponents. Navalny was serving a 19-year prison sentence for charges that many believe were made up for political reasons. He was moved to a very harsh prison last year. The prison authorities in the Yamalo-Nenets district said Navalny didn’t feel well after a walk on Friday.
A statement said that Navalny immediately lost consciousness. Although the emergency medical help tried to revive him but couldn’t. Doctors later declared him dead, and they’re figuring out why he died. Navalny, who was 47 years old, looked fine and happy in a court hearing on video just a day before. His mother was quite upset and depressed, And stated, “I don’t want condolences.” She saw him in prison on February 12th, alive, healthy, and cheerful.
Navalny’s lawyer, Leonid Solovyov, said he wouldn’t talk about it yet. But Navalny’s close aide, Leonid Volkov, wrote on X: “Russian authorities admit they killed Alexei Navalny in prison. We can’t confirm it or prove it’s not true.” According to a report from a Russian TV channel, Navalny had a blood clot. But a doctor in Moscow, Alexander Polupan, who treated Navalny before, said that diagnosis could only be confirmed after an examination after death.
Within minutes of Navalny’s death being announced by the prison service countries around the world praised his bravery in standing up to Vladimir Putin. France said he sacrificed his life to oppose Russian “oppression,” and Norway’s foreign minister blamed Russian authorities for his death. Russian human rights activist and journalist Eva Merkacheva revealed that Navalny had been put in solitary confinement at least 27 times, which could be the reason for his death. She explained that such harsh treatment is very harmful to the body and could have played a role in his demise.
