Amitabh Bachchan’s film Kaala Patthar was shot at Dhanbad, Jharkhand. This film was based on a real incident. This was a dreadful incident and when a film based on it hit the screen people got shocked. Majority of the people understood the scary reality of the incident after watching the film. The real story was of December 27, 1975. Jus in a few minutes more than 375 people lost their lives in a shocking incident. It was Chasanala mining disaster. An explosion in the mine followed by flooding killed more than 375 people. The incident happened when a roof of coal caved in, 7 million imperial gallons (32,000 m3) of water per minute flooded into the mine. The miners were trapped under a mountain of debris and drowned when the water surged into the mine. The Indian Iron and Steel Company (IISCO), which owned the mine, said it conformed to international standards. Chasanala is also included in the list of World’s biggest 10 mining disasters.
Director Yash Chopra narrated this whole incident by making a film Kaala Patthar. Film Kala Patthar depicts the tragedy. Later a Shaheed Smarak was built in the memory of the victims. The film was a blockbuster. It released on August 24, 1979. Film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Rakhi, Neetu Sinha were in the main leads.
