The legendary actors Tanuja and Asha Parekh have spoken out about how no one is writing roles for them. The performers complain that they are only being given boring grandmother roles, pointing out that Amitabh Bachchan is being given leading roles and is the face of movies.
Asha, who appeared concerned over the state of the Hindu film industry during a meeting of Maitri: Female First Collective, said, “Today, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, at this age also, people are writing roles for him. Why aren’t people writing roles for us? We also should be getting some roles which are important to the film. That’s not there. Either we are playing mother, grandmother or we are playing the sister. Who’s interested?”
80-year-old Amitabh Bachchan has featured five films last year. He appeared in the movies Goodbye, Runway 34, Jhund, Brahmastra, and Jhund.
Asha Parekh further added, “For woman those days it was like if they got married, their career was finished. Now it is not so. So the hero’s maybe 50 or 55 years they are working with 20-year-olds and that is acceptable till today.”
Tanuja concurred with Asha and noted that she helped other women and carved out a niche in the profession. She averred, “In this time, it is very important for women to understand and tell yourself that – You are possible. You can’t say to yourself – I am impossible.”
