Are you a fan of Game of Thrones fantasy television series? Then there is a bad news for you! As according to reports, HBO and Amazon are parting ways in mid-2018. The chairman and CEO of HBO channel Richard Plepler stated that “I don’t think you’ll see us extend or expand our library programming on Amazon beyond the end of next year,”.
Presently, Amazon and HBO are undergoing a four-year licensing contract valued in the $250 millon-$300 million range. According to this contract, Amazon can stream select shows from HBO’s large library of television series consisting the shows like The Wire, Sopranos, True Blood, and of course, Game of Thrones — on Amazon Prime.
However, now HBO has decided to pull its shows from Amazon Prime in order to build its own base of subscribers for HBO Now. Basically, as HBO now already has all of HBO’s shows on it so it feels that there is no need of licensing agreements as HBO feels it’s like competing with itself by licensing shows to Amazon.
When for the first time HBO and Amazon collaborated in 2014, their plan was to feature newer series like Girls and Game of Thrones to be available on Amazon for three years after their final seasons. However, now it seems that it won’t happen. So if you use Amazon Prime to get your Thrones fix, stream while you can.
