BAFTA 2017 Recap: Dev Patel, Emma Stone & La La Land Won The Night

Critically acclaimed musical romantic comedy La La Land landed five big trophies at the 70th British Academy Film Awards held at Royal Albert Hall, London. La La Land won the most awards at the event, including the Best Film award. Director Damien Chazelle won the award for Best Director and Emma Stone won the Best Actress Award for her lead role in La La Land.

Dev Patel won his first-ever BAFTA for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the highly-praised film Lion. The film is considered to be a commercial and critical success. It received six Oscar nominations, including Dev for the Best Supporting Actor.

Casey Affleck won the Best Actor Award for Manchester by the Sea at the BAFTAs. The film received widespread acclaim from noted critics and especially for Casey Affleck’s performance as the lead actor and for Lonergan’s direction and screenplay. Manchester by the Sea received six nominations at this year’s Oscars.

Viola Davis won the Best Actress in a Supporting Role for acclaimed drama film Fences – directed by Denzel Washington. The Jungle Book won the BAFTA for Best Special Visual Effects beating Marvel’s Doctor Strange – both being made by Disney Studios.

Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was nominated in five categories – including Outstanding British Film and Best Special Visual Effects. The film won the award for Best Production Design.

2016’s critically acclaimed science fiction film Arrival won the BAFTA for Best Sound. And Best Animated Film was given to Kubo and the Two Strings, beating Disney’s Finding Dory and Zootopia.

Mel Gibson’s biographical war drama film, Hacksaw Ridge – starring Andrew Garfield, won the BAFTA for Best Editing. The film received six nominations at this year’s Oscars.

Chosen entirely by the public votes via text, internet or phone, Tom Holland won the BAFTA Rising Star Award.
