Barcelona completed one of the most astonishing comebacks in the history of football by beating Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) 6-1 to reach the Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday. Sergi Roberto’s stoppage-time strike helped Barcelona come back from 4-0 down against PSG.
This victory has made Barcelona the first team ever to overturn a 4-0 first-leg defeat since the Champions League format started in the 1992-93 season. Barca coach Luis Enrique told reporters:
“This is a crazy, unique sport. Children and adults here tonight will never forget what happened.”
He further added: “I dedicate this win to all Barca fans who kept faith in us. We were massively criticized after the first leg.” On Tuesday night, banners were hung up around the city by Barcelona’s diehard fans with messages of support for the team and that climate was carried out in the stadium.
PSG coach Unai Emery said: “Barcelona are capable of doing that. It was all or nothing for them in the final minutes. It’s a negative experience for me and for the club. We need to learn from it.”
Interestingly, PSG had a penalty appeal turned down when Julian Draxler’s low cross struck Javier Mascherano’s arm but it was one of few forays forward from PSG in the first half as Barca did all the attacking.
