In Gujarat, the legislative assembly election will be held this year to elect members of the 182 constituencies in the state. Both the major political parties are trying to convince the voters to their respective sides. Recently, BJP MLA from Surat, Sangita Patil has given a controversial statement about the Muslims. She said that she wanted to ban Muslims from buying Hindu properties.
Patil has demanded imposition of “Disturbed Areas Act” (bans sale of property by a member of one religious community to a member of another community) to prevent Muslims from acquiring residential properties of Hindus in her constituency of Limbayat.
She further sent an official request in a written form to the district collector for the imposition of the act.
Patil said, as reported by The Huffington Post: “Limbayat was once a Hindu area. But now, many societies, such as Govind Nagar, Bharati Nagar, Madanpura and Bhavna Park, which go by Hindu name, are now dominated by Muslims. If they do not get the house easily, they even threaten Hindus and force them to sell it.”
She further added:
“The way Muslims are using various tactics to acquire Hindu properties, I am of the opinion that the ‘Disturbed Areas Act’ should be imposed here to stop them from spreading into Hindu areas. I requested the collector to do so after many residents made their representations to me.”
Interestingly, the act is in action in several places of Surat city.
