2016 began with the terrible news of a terror attack at the Indian Air Force base in Pathankot. While we still don’t have news of its conclusion, seven Indians defence personnel have already died in the attack.
According to multiple agencies, the martyrs included a Garud Commando from IAF, 5 personnel of the Defence Security Corps (DSC) and an NSG personnel. We think it’s our duty their memory while their sacrifice helped us breathe a sigh of relief.
Here’s are the men you need to know about:
1. Lt Col Niranjan of NSG
The latest casualty of the event. This young soldier died in the IED blast during combing operations at Pathankot Air Base today.
2. Capt Fateh Singh of DSC
He was part of Army’s Marksmanship Unit in Mhow for many years, joined the Defense Security Corps (DSC) after retiring from the Army as a Subedar Major. Till last year, Singh was posted in Mhow under Dogra Regiment and was transferred to Pathankot later. You can read more about him here.
3. Corporal Gursewak Singh, A Garud Commando
He died in while protecting the base from the terrorist.
4. Hawaldar Kulwant Singh of DSC
Another braveheart who fought off the attackers who allegedly used the same route to enter India and conduct the attacks as the Gurudaspur attackers.
5. Havildar Jagdish Chandra
While not much information exists about Hawildar Jagdish Chandra, the IAF in a press conference just confirmed his name as one of the first Jawans to take on the terrorists. Hawildar Jagdish was working in the kitchen as a cook when the terrorists attacked. He chased the terrorists apparently bare-handed and managed to kill one of the terrorists there itself with his own rifle. He later fell to the bullets of the remaining terrorists.
6. Havildar Sanjeevan Singh Rana
7. Havildar Mohit Chand
We await further updates from the authorities and will keep updating the list as soon as the remaining martyrs are identified.
