Chennai Super Kings (CSK), an IPL team, want to enter the proposed South African league in order to expand its brand into other sports and strengthen its standing in cricket.
“It is not only cricket but other sporting fields. Wherever we can make a mark with the CSK culture, we will certainly be looking at them,” KS Viswanathan, CEO of CSK, told Moneycontrol.
According to him, most sports, including kabaddi, badminton, and others, have already gone the franchise path. One of India’s oldest outdoor activities, kho-kho, isn’t falling behind.
“Everything will be done based on a firm business plan. If it is worth doing, we will certainly be interested,” Viswanathan said.
Nothing “stops us from putting up our ideas to the top management,” he said, adding that the top management would have the final say. (as stated to moneycontrol)
Viswanathan reaffirmed CSK’s desire to buy a cricket franchise in South Africa, where the nation’s governing body plans to launch a domestic league similar to the IPL.“We really want to get into cricket leagues in other countries,” he said.
