The Oscar nominations were announced earlier this week, but they have not been very well received by China. The Chinese government has now even banned all local media from providing live coverage of the Oscars in 2021.
The reason for this? Two nominated films have shot China down the wrong path, namely Do Not Split and Nomandland.
Why
Do Not Split received an Oscar nomination for Best Short Documentary. The film is about Hong Kong’s struggle against interference from the Chinese government, which is not very well portrayed.
Despite the fact that Nomadland does not show a negative image of China, this film is also boycotted. The film has already come under fire in China , as director Chloé Zhao said last year that the United States is now her home, leading some to suspect that she no longer has a Chinese passport.
In another interview, which dates back to 2013, she called China a ” land of liesEnough reason, then, for the propaganda division of the Chinese Communist Party to boycott this year’s Oscars. Chinese media are only allowed to report on ‘uncontroversial awards’.
