On the ninth anniversary of the Shoojit Sircar-directed film Piku (2015), Deepika Padukone broke down in tears. She conveyed love to the director, writer Juhi Chaturvedi, and actor Amitabh Bachchan who portrayed her father in the acclaimed movie as well as to her late co-star Irrfan Khan. The star added that she would act in the movie again in a heartbeat if she had the chance to do it all over again.
Deepika posted a couple images from the movie’s production on Instagram along with the caption, “It’s been 8 years since this gem of a movie released with these 2 very special people. And if I could relive this experience all over again, I’d do it in a heartbeat. @irrfan, I miss you! @amitabhbachchan , @sircarshoojit & @juhic3 I love you! To everyone who made this film possible, thank you for your energy. #Piku.”
She shared three images, one of which included Irrfan Khan, herself, and Amitabh in a marketing photo behind an automobile cutout. The second image included all three actors in a shot from inside a car, and the third image featured the actors in costume striking amusing expressions for the camera.
Fans reacted to the post, someone wrote, “Came during the dying hours of Bollywood era, Piku is the kind of sleeper/musical hit movie that Bollywood used to deliver once in few months every year.” Another averred, “Piku is my comfort movie and so is these characters. Deepika you as piku will always be special.” A comment read, “Piku is indeed a gem of movie and will always have a special place in my heart.”
Irrfan passed away on April 29, 2020; he portrayed Rana Chaudhary in the movie. His persona, the proprietor of a car rental business, transports Piku, a strong-willed and independent single woman, and her father from Delhi to Kolkata. Along with Raghubir Yadav, the cast also includes Moushumi Chatterjee and Jisshu Sengupta.
At the 63rd National Film Awards, Amitabh got his fourth National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance as Piku’s widowed hypochondriac father, Bhashkor Banerjee. At the 61st Filmfare Awards, Deepika was presented with the Best Actress trophy, and the movie also received four more prizes, including Best Film (Critics).
