Indian-origin British actor Dev Patel won his first-ever BAFTA for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the highly-praised film Lion. The film is considered to be a commercial and critical success. The film also won the BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay – Luke Davies.

The 70th British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) were held at Royal Albert Hall, London.

Known for Slumdog Millionaire, Dev had great actors to compete with in the category – Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals).

Dev Patel BAFTA Speech

At the 74th Golden Globe Awards, Dev lost the award for Best Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture Aaron Taylor-Johnson for his performance in Tom Ford directed film Nocturnal Animals. After getting a BAFTA, chances are that he may bag an Oscar too.

On winning the BAFTA Dev told IANS, “I would be lying if I say that awards are not amazing. Awards can really change someone’s career. You get recognition.” He said. “You might get scripts that you didn’t get earlier. But I never took up project thinking about a golden statue.”

Lion is based on Saroo Brierley’s best-selling autobiography A Long Way Home. The film is directed by Garth Davis. The cast includes – Dev Patel, Rooney Mara and Nicole Kidman. The film first premiered in 2016 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2016.
