With Kalpana Chawla being the first women to reach outer space, Sania Mirza and Sania Nehwal ruling the sports era of India, Dipa Karmakar has also set a new record of being the first Indian women gymnast to be qualified for Olympics.
This record was set on Monday and with its creation, Dipa Karmakar won the hearts of many people. The 22yr old gymnast made a place for the Rio Olympic games with a score of total 52.698 points in the qualifying event and honoured India. With her selection for Olympics, she’s also the 12th Indian gymnast who is ever selected for such event. As soon as she made the record and secured a place in Olympics she went viral on the Internet and received blessings and wishes from many people. From a normal tea stall owner to the very big businessmen of India, everyone was proud of her.
“Following the Women’s Qualification Competition at the Gymnastics Test Event in Rio, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) herewith confirms the list of nations and individual gymnasts that have qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games,” the world body said in its release and in the list which it mentioned, Dipa Karmakar was the 79th qualifier. This is also after 52 years that an Indian is selected for gymnastics on a level as high as Olympics, therefore, whole country’s eye are set on her.
