Kalinga Institute Of Social Sciences popularly known as KISS is an institution founded by Achyuta Samanta in 1993 it began with 125 tribal students with the help of ministry of tribal affairs. Now it is the largest residential institute which provides accommodation, study, career development and healthcare to about 25, 000 tribal students each year at its integrated residential campus located in Bhubaneshwar. KISS provide holistic education ( Meaning complete education ), from Kindergarten to post – graduation.
KISS is built on 15,00,000 Square feet total (80 acres) which is commendable, students from 62 tribal communities of Orissa, out of which 13 are primitive tribes ( The earliest tribes of mankind ). But how KISS works ? How these 25 thousand children’s are provided first class facilities ? First, let us tell you about the founder of KISS, he is not an ordinary man Achyuta Samanta who is the founder was born in a poor family of Cuttack district village Kalarabanka in 1965 ( Current age – 51 ), he lost his father when he was just 4 years old. But he did not lose his hope, he completed his M.sc in Chemistry from Utkal University.
He taught for many years and then he decided to start an Industria Training Institute which later converted into a UGC approved University. And later he founded KISS, how he did all this is truly inspiring. KISS income sources are various – 50 % 0f Kalinga Institute Of Industrial Technology which is 40.99 crores is donated to KISS as a charity, the faculty of KISS donates their 3 % salary which amounts to 4. 43 crores, donations from different organizations and corporate houses like Give India amounts to total Rs. 18. 39 crores, products which students produce collects 0.35 crores approx. from sales. In 2015, the total money spend on KISS was 65 Crores.
Students are exposed to archery, yoga, dance, quiz competitions are held, music, stage plays, and debates are held for students betterment. The infrastructure of KISS is fully equipped with modern facilities- classrooms, bedrooms, the library which is 15,000 square. feet , a hostel for boys and girls, gymnasium, playground basically everything which is available in a city University.
The kitchen of KISS has fully mechanized steam based and at a time 10 thousand can eat food, which is a multi-purpose use hall. There is a mega bathing complex where a total of 500 children can take a bath at a time. KISS offers 11 post graduation and 5 graduation courses.
Student’s achievements of KISS –
Janaki Murmu a 12th class student was selected in Indian Football team to take part in IIFC under 16 category at China which ended on 5th September.
And Geeta Bhuyiya, an International Baseball Player of KISS was selected in the India Women Baseball Team to participate in “2016 Women’s Baseball World Cup” which will be held in Gijang, South Korea from 3-11 September 2016.
Ranjit Naik participated in Youth Olympics 2013 which was held in Waxi, China.
Rajanikant Naik cracked the IIT- JEE competitive exam.
