Every year over 1.5 lakhs Ganesh idols are immersed in the sea to celebrate the much loved maharashtrian festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. This year however, the grand festival will bring about a revolution that will not pollute the sea waters but will be beneficial to our environment and marine life.
The Ganesh idols this year will not be made from Plaster of Paris(POP) and harmful chemical paints. The mumbaikers will celebrate the festival in an eco friendly way by immersing idols made from edible material such as corn and vegetable powder, that fish can eat and will also be colored by natural materials such as haldi (turmeric), chandan (sandalwood) and geru (ochre).
A mumbai based NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation) has come up with this brilliant idea to not only protect our waters from polluting but also to feed the fish in the ocean at the same time. Many bollywood celebs too are supporting and encouraging this genius initiative.
