Just in case you worried Beverly Hills Cop 4 is still in development at Netflix. But Eddie Murphy waits until the script is right before he sees Axel Foley’s return. This month, Murphy reprized the role of Akeem Joffer in the comedy sequel Coming 2 America . Released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, the sequel has been touted by the company as the most-released movie in a single weekend since the start of the pandemic.
Coming to America isn’t the only classic film of his career that Eddie Murphy will revisit. In 2019, Paramount Pictures announced that Netflix had acquired the rights to a Beverly Hills Cop sequel. It has also been reported that Bad Boys for Life coxswains Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are also on board to co-direct the film with Murphy set to reprise the role of Axel Foley. Talking about Beverly Hills Cop 4 on Desus and Mero , Murphy provided an update on the current status of the project.
“They’ve been trying to make another Beverly Hills cop for 15 years now. Right now Netflix has it, and they’re trying to develop a script. That’s what we’re supposed to do next. But, I am not doing anything until the script is correct. ”
Last May, Arbi also gave a promising update on the sequel in an interview with Digital Spy . At the time, the co-director shared how they were still polishing the story with a new screenwriter, and also expressed how eager they were to work with Murphy.
“We’re still involved in this project, and now there is a screenwriter who will try to write a first draft, or at least a first treatment with the story,” said Arbi. “So we’re going to see what the first version will be, but we’re very excited and hope to be able to work with another icon like Eddie Murphy. That would be great. “
Murphy first appeared as Axel Foley when the original Beverly Hills Cop was released in 1984. Directed by Martin Brest, the film follows a Detroit cop on his way to Beverly Hills, California, to the pursuit of his friend’s murderer. Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Lisa Eilbacher, Ronny Cox and Steevn Berkoff also performed. The film was a huge box office hit as the highest grossing 1984 film in the United States.
