Women’s rights activist and member of Afghanistan Parliament, Fawzia Koofi is the lady, Afghanistan will look upon when it comes to the presidential election in 2019. War-torn-country has been improving for quite some time but this woman, Fawzia has the potential to change the country’s politics in an optimistic manner. Fawzia currently serves as Chairperson of Afghanistan’s Women, Civil Society and Human Rights Commission.
Fawzia, in an interview, said: “Life is still more restricted for women in Afghanistan than what it was when I was a little girl. In fact, there is a positive discrimination in our constitution for women that ensure women’s participation in the national level and that is a great step forward, but fears still remain that Taliban might come back and the situation will deteriorate again for women.”
Fawzia Koofi’s political career
Fawzia worked with UNICEF as a Child Protection Officer and also launched a campaign, named “Back To School”. She was the first female Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament in the history of Afghanistan.
She has survived several assassination attempts. There were speculations that Fawzia could run for 2014 Afghan presidential election but she did not qualify for the minimum age requirement of 40 years of old.

When Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 1996, It was a big setback for women. Not just for her but the whole society of girls in Afghanistan was curbed from continuing their education and dreams.

Fawzia said: “I am hoping a woman becomes the president of Afghanistan. Afghanistan should experience this. Though it is not easy, I don’t think it is easy for women anywhere in the world. In Afghanistan, the challenges for women remain much more, of course, because of security.”
