Godzilla vs. Kong is coming later this month. Yes, this is in many ways the cinematic showdown of 2021. But it could also be kind of a calling card for director Adam Wingard. As the filmmaker recently explained, upcoming blockbusters function, in some ways, like an audition to direct a Star Wars movie at some point on the line.
Adam Wingard recently took the tour to promote Godzilla vs. Kong , who is finally released after several delays. During an interview in the last issue of Fangoria, Wingard explained that there are certain elements of the film that he hopes could pave the way for him to enter the Star Wars fold at some point. . Here’s what he had to say about it.
“We’ve come to some pretty alien places in this movie and we’re playing with physics in a way that’s very unique to this movie. In a lot of ways, I think this movie is like my audition to try and direct a Star Wars movie on some point. “
Until this point in his career, Adam Wingard has not directed a film of this magnitude. He has made popular films that have gone on to become such hits as You Are Next and The Guest . He also took up a franchise with 2016’s Blair Witch . But nothing on this scale or budget level. If Godzilla vs. Kong turns out to be a success, it could very well position him as someone who would fit right into the fold of Lucasfilm. And, it’s worth pointing out, he wouldn’t be the first director to move from the MonsterVerse to a galaxy far, far away.
Gareth Edwards broke with his micro-budget monster movie Monsters . He then jumped into the big leagues for Godzilla in 2014, which kicked off the current iteration of the franchise that will continue in Godzilla vs. Kong . Edwards was then selected by Lucasfilm to direct Rogue One, the first standalone film in the history of the Star Wars franchise. While production was a bit rough, with lots of rewrites and endgame covers, Thief One was a huge hit, grossing over $ 1 billion at the box office. It also ranks among the most beloved Star Wars movies of the Disney era.
It’s also worth noting that there will be plenty of Star Wars to tour in the future. Not only does Disney have multiple release dates set aside for future films, with Squadron of Thieves arriving in 2023, Disney + will host multiple shows within the franchise thanks to the success of The Mandalorian . These shows, which include Ahsoka , The Book of Boba Fett , Rangers of the New Republic and The Acolyte , among others, will offer many filmmakers the chance to star in this sandbox. In the meantime, Adam Wingard has his Face / Off following to occupy some time. You can check out the original post from the Fangoria Twitter account.
