Indian movies have had a great year in 2023, with many of them setting and shattering box office records. More box office records could be set because some of the most anticipated movies of the year, like Dunki and Salaar: Part 1-Ceasefire, are still pending release. Animal achieved the ₹650 crore global gross threshold on Sunday. The Ranbir Kapoor movie joined the four other Indian movies this year that accomplished the same accomplishment.

Film trade analyst Ramesh Bala tweeted, “2023 Indian movies that grossed ₹650 crore plus at the worldwide box office 1. Pathan 2. Jawan 3. Jailer 4. Gadar 2 5. Animal – still running.”
A brief on the highest grossers of the year

In barely nine days after its release, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s action movie Animal has made over ₹660.89 crore in revenue globally. Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, and others are in the movie as well. Bobby Deol is under fire for his alleged misogyny and toxicity. The movie is getting close to reaching the ₹700 crore global box office milestone, even though its troublesome moments and “flawed” characters have caused criticism.

In 2023, Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, became the first movie to earn over ₹650 crore at the global box office. According to a report by Sacnilk.com, the spy movie, which co-stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, was released around Republic Day and has made ₹1055 crore in total lifetime worldwide.

Around the same time, on August 11 and August 10, respectively, Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 and Rajinikanth’s Jailer were released. Together, they made over ₹650 crore at the box office globally. Gadar 2’s lifetime global receipts came to ₹686 crore, according to a Sacnilk.com article.
In September, Manobala Vijayabalan, a cinema trade analyst, tweeted that Jailer had made over ₹650 crore worldwide. Along with Vasanth Ravi, Tamannaah Bhatia, Yogi Babu, Ramya Krishnan, Shiva Rajkumar, Mohanlal, and Vinayakan, the Tamil film had Hindi, Kannada, and Telugu dubbings.

Jawan, the other 2023 smash hit for Shah Rukh Khan, brought in ₹1160 crore globally, according to a report on Sacnilk.com. All eyes are now on Dunki, his third movie of the year, and whether or not it will top the massive box office receipts of Pathaan and Jawan.
