Actress Hina Khan left her fans shocked after she shared her battle with stage three breast cancer, including the tough choice to cut her hair. Last week, Khan announced her diagnosis, saying, “Even though this is a tough diagnosis, I want everyone to know that I’m doing okay. Many cancer patients lose their hair during treatment, so I decided to cut my beautiful hair before it starts falling out.”
On Thursday morning, Khan posted a video where she sits in front of a mirror with hairstylist Dwyessh Parasanani, ready to cut her hair. In the video her mother, is trying to be supportive but she is equally emotional and heard crying in the background. Hair stylist hands Khan scissors to cut the front section of her hair herself before giving her a complete haircut. By the end of the video, Khan expresses that she feels “liberated.”
In the video caption, she explains her decision to turn her hair into a wig, highlighting both its practical and emotional benefits. “I’ve decided to use my own hair to make a nice wig for this phase,” said Hina.

How a custom wig from your own hair is created
Creating a wig from your own hair is a detailed process that brings comfort and confidence to those losing their hair for various reasons. This involves many steps, from collecting the hair to the final styling, and results in a natural-looking, personalized hairpiece that can greatly improve someone’s quality of life.
According to Dr. Gunasekar Vuppalapati making a custom wig from your hair is an artistic process. He explains that it begins with a consultation to discuss your needs and preferences, including the style, length, and color you want. After this the hair is carefully collected, often over multiple sessions to gather enough for a full wig. The hair is then sorted and cleaned to remove any debris or impurities. The next step is creating a foundation for the wig, called the cap, which is usually made of lace or other breathable materials. This cap is custom-fitted to match your head shape and size. He said “Once the cap is ready, the collected hair is carefully hand-tied or ventilated onto the cap, strand by strand,” In this entire process it is made sure that the wig looks natural and moves realistically.
After attaching the hair to the cap, it’s styled and cut to match your desired look. This might include cutting, layering, coloring, or perming the hair. At the end what we get is a custom-made wig that looks just like your natural hair, offering a sense of familiarity and comfort during a difficult time.
