At Lucknow’s Vikramaditya Marg, Mulayam Singh Yadav’s house and the new residence of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav share a wall. On Sunday night, hours before a meeting called by Mulayam Singh, this wall represented a divide that father and son may not even be planning to bridge.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav arrived at the Samajwadi Party office in Lucknow to attend a big meeting of party leaders called by his father and party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, amid speculation that the party is headed for a split just before assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Here are the latest developments in the story :

Not long before the Chief Minister arrived, his supporters clashed with those of Shivpal Yadav, his uncle and the Samajwadi Party’s Uttar Pradesh chief, outside the party office, also engaging in competitive sloganeering.

On Sunday, Akhilesh Yadav, 43, fired Shivpal Yadav, 61, as a minister in his government for the second time in a month. It was seen as a direct challenge to his father, who has been promoting Shivpal over him.

Apparently returning the favour, Mulayam Singh Yadav sacked from the Samjawadi Party, his cousin Ram Gopal Yadav, a trusted adviser to Akhilesh. Shivpal Yadav announced Ram Gopal Yadav’s expulsion “for colluding with the BJP”.

He also blamed him for the Samajwadi Party’s exit from the Nitish Kumar-led Grand Coalition in Bihar before elections in that state last year, widely seen as a political misstep by Mulayam Singh.

People are saying a new party will be formed. Who is forming is a new party ? I am not, says Akhilesh Yadav.

Akhilesh Yadav has suggested that he will not force a split. “Mulayam Yadav is my father. I’ll serve him all my life. I don’t want to split the party and will participate in the party’s 25th anniversary celebrations on November 5,” he said at a meeting of party lawmakers that he called on Sunday.

The removal of Shivpal Yadav was announced at that meeting, hurriedly called by Akhilesh after his father had set the meeting with the lawmakers and other party leaders for Monday.

Ram Gopal Yadav, a long-time opponent of Shivpal Yadav, has been championing Akhilesh as the “true and most popular leader” of the party. After his expulsion on Sunday, he said he was hurt about the allegations and pledged unwavering allegiance to Akhilesh Yadav.

What has led to a turf war is who should be selected as candidates for the election. The Chief Minister’s preferences vary hugely from those of his father and Shivpal.
