Leading India from the front, opener Sai Sudharsan pulled off an uncommon feat in Tuesday’s series finale against South Africa at St George’s Park in Gqeberha as captain Rahul hammered his 18th One Day International (ODI) half-century. On the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction day, Nandre Burger of South Africa took three wickets to help the hosts mount a strong comeback after Team India finished with a low scoring total in the 2nd ODI. Burger claimed three wickets in 46.2 overs to help India reach 211.
In the Gqeberha mini-auction held on the same day as the IPL 2024 in Dubai, India’s emerging talent Rinku Singh defeated Rajat Patidar to secure a spot in the starting XI. In the opening over of the second ODI, Rahul’s Team India lost opener Ruturaj Gaikwad despite being invited to bat first.
Rewriting history, teenager Sudharsan became the second Indian batsman to score two half-centuries in India’s opening two One-Day Internationals (ODIs) after Navjot Singh Sidhu. India had the luxury of starting Rinku in its playing XI because middle-order batsman Iyer was expected to join the Test squad for the match against the Proteas on Boxing Day. While Rinku, a young player for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), was a star performer for the visitors in T20Is, the power batter only managed to score 17 runs.
India defeated the Proteas by eight wickets thanks to a solid half-century from B. Sai Sudarshan. For the Men in Blue, Sudharsan struck nine boundaries in his 55 runs off of just 43 balls as he started the innings. Premier batsman Shreyas Iyer supported him, scoring a vital fifty-two off forty-five balls to help India chase down the meager goal of 117 in sixteen and a half overs. Fast-bowling master Arshdeep Singh took five wickets in the first 50 overs of the series, his first-ever five-wicket haul in the format. In 10 overs, Arshdeep returned spectacular figures of five for 37, earning him the title of Player of the Match.
