In a major step towards nation’s security, India has finally begun its “mother of all underwater defence deals” with Russia, Sweden, Spain, Japan, France and Germany. The motive is to build six advanced stealth submarines in collaboration with an Indian shipyard for an estimated Rs 70,000 crore ($10.9 billion).
The project has finally kick started after a delay of 10 years.
Project-75 (India), The Conventional Submarine Program
In November 2007, the conventional submarine program named as Project-75(India) got the government’s approval. Under the new ‘strategic partnership’ policy, which is finalised by the Defence ministry in May, this program is the first large project, which is at the initial stage.
An RFI (request for information) has been issued to the Shipbuilders of six nations such as Rosoboronexport Rubin Design Bureau (Russia), Mitsubishi-Kawasaki Heavy Industries combine (Japan), Naval Group-DCNS (France), Navanti(Spain), ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (Germany) and Saab (Sweden), and all have to respond to it by September 15.
Before a formal RFP (request for proposal), the Indian Navy will draft the NSQRs (naval staff qualitative requirements).
A defence ministry official said to The Times of India, “It may take around two years for the original equipment manufacturer (OEM)-Indian shipyard combine to be down-selected. Moreover, the first new submarine will roll out only seven to eight years after the final contract is inked. But the aim is to fast-track the entire process.”

The official further added: “The stress will be on the transfer of technology from the OEM and indigenization. The submarines, to be built with indigenous steel, should also be less maintenance-intensive to ensure a better operational cycle with minimal downtime.”
Requirements Of The Indian Navy To Counter Pakistan And China
The Indian Navy should have six nuclear-powered attack submarines (called SSNs), 18 diesel-electric submarines and four nuclear-powered submarines with long-range nuclear-tipped missiles (SSBNs) to counter the evil plans of Pakistan and China.
