New Delhi : Indian Airforce (IAF) helicopter Chetak tumbled during training sortie while making an emergency landing in Bamraulli near Allahabad.Both the pilots onboard are safe.The helicopter unbalanced when the pilots tried to make a forced landing after a technical problem developed in the Chetak helicopter.
The IAF has ordered a court of inquiry (COI) to ascertain the cause of the accident. The sources said the aircraft toppled while the pilots tried to force land it on an uneven field. The helicopter was on a routine training sortie from Bamrauli airport, near Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.
Chetak helicopters are ageing as they are in Indian Airforce service from the long time and several pilots have lost their lives in Cheetak helicopters. Ministry of defence is making deals to procure new helicopters in Indian Force Helicopter fleet.
A group of Army wives started an online petition which was signed by 23,000 people to stop the use of outdated helicopters in Indian Airforce as they are dangerous for the life of pilots.The group also met the Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar last year requesting him to remove old helicopters from the fleet.
