India’s longest bridge is in the final stages of construction. It is over nine kilometres long and is likely to be inaugurated a year from now in Assam by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This week, an invite was presented to him by the Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal.

BJP won Assam from Congress last year, becoming the first of the eight northeastern states to be controlled by the party.

India's Longest Bridge: 10 Points You Need To Know

Here are the 10 points about it:

  1. The Dhola-Sadiya bridge is being built over Lohit river, a tributary of the Brahmaputra.
  2. In Assam, the bridge is located in Sadia, 540 kilometres from the state capital, Guwahati. Its other end is in Dhola, 300 kilometres from Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh.
  3. It is little over nine kilometres long, that’s nearly 30 percent longer than the famous Bandra-Worli Sealink in Mumbai.
  4. Once opened, the bridge will reduce travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by up to four hours. There is no operational airport in Arunachal Pradesh.
  5. Construction began in 2011 when Congress governed Assam. The cost of the project is about 950 crores.
  6. So far, there is little connectivity between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Currently, the only route for people looking to travel from this part of Assam to Arunachal is by boat.
  7. Its strategic importance for the military is huge. With the help of bridge, troops will be able to enter Arunachal Pradesh, which borders China, much more quickly and easily.
  8. The bridge has been designed to accommodate the movement of tanks.
  9. There is no existing bridge in the region that is strong enough to allow the travel of tanks to Tinsukia, from where troops usually enter Arunachal.
  10. Construction of the bridge was included in the 15,000 crore package sanctioned by the centre in 2015 to improve road connectivity in the border state.
