With Dutee Chand bagging a spot in Rio Olympics 2016, finally India makes a come backs in races, 36 years after PT Usha last represented India in Women’s 100m category.
Indian sprinter Dutee Chand has qualified for the 100m event at Rio 2016 a year after winning her battle against suspension over naturally occurring high testosterone levels. The Odisha sprinter hit the Olympic mark of 11.32 by completing a 100m sprint in 11.30 at a qualification event in Almaty, Kazakhstan in the heats.
High testosterone level in the body, lead her to face discrimination and humilation, at the hands of many. Hyperandrogenism, is a condition which leads to very high levels of testosterone in the body, which Dutee Chand is reportedly suffering from. Chand’s battle against the International Association of Athletics Federation’s (IAAF) hyperandrogenism rules came five years after South African athlete Caster Semenya, was subjected to gender tests.
Hope that with the return of an Indian athlete in Rio Olympics, India dutifully gets to claim the medal as well !!
