When Pandavas won the battle of Kurukshetra then all the Pandavas along with Krishna went to meet Dhritarashtra and Gandhari. Here Dhritarashtra tried to kill Bheem but due to Sri Krishna’s strong instincts, he failed to kill Bheem. After that, Pandavas met Gandhari she was also raged as she lost his 100 sons because of Pandavas.

But she came to her normal after some time. After that, Maharishi Vedvyas took Yudhishthira, Pandavas and others to Kurukshetra. Here Dhritarashtra asked Yudhishthira about the number of soldiers killed in the battle. Yudhishthira told more than 1 Arab 66 crore 20 thousand soldiers. Apart from that 24 thousand 165 soldiers were missing. So what happened to the dead bodies?

Unlike the wars that are fought today, the dead soldiers were not looted or mutilated. At the end of every day, the dead bodies were taken away and given to their respective family, who would cremate them with honor.  And as everyone knows, cremation turns bones to ashes.

The other reason is, after Bhisma Pitamah took his last breath on the auspicious day of Uttarayan, the entire battlefield was burnt. This was done in hope that all the warriors would be granted a place in heaven and the land would be purified by Agni (fire).
