In January 2017, it was reported that India is looking into major reconstruction projects in Syria. Moreover, India has not officially declared its allegiance to any of the international coalitions fighting in the Syrian civil war. Basically, India and Syria have maintained good ties through the war years.

Also, in August 2016, India’s minister of state for external affairs, M.J. Akbar, visited Damascus to hold talks with Assad. Syria has asked India to take part in the reconstruction of the country.

In December 2016, India joined 32 other countries, including Pakistan, in abstaining from a UN vote calling for an immediate ceasefire in Syria.

In 2014, during a conference at Geneva, India’s then foreign minister, Salman Khurshid said: “India believes that societies cannot be re-ordered from outside and that people in all countries have the right to choose their own destiny and decide their own future. In line with this, India supports an all-inclusive Syrian-led process to chart out the future of Syria, its political structures and leadership.”

Author’s take: Personally, India is working really hard to become a global superpower, therefore, the government cannot go out an out to help Syria as it faces diplomatic fence-sitting.
