However, his status is inherently linked to several scandals and controversies, making him a controversial figure. Despite being known as the troublemaker, G-Dragon, real name Kwon Ji Yong, always seems to draw attention, whether it’s because of his private life, relationships with powerful people in the business, or the most recent drug controversy. Here are six instances where he sparked controversy and garnered media attention.
2023 drug controversy
G-Dragon voluntarily came up for interrogation at the Narcotics Unit of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency last week, and he even provided samples, after his name made the headlines. Reports that G-Dragon had shaved off all of his body hair in order to tamper with the evidence spread, which heightened tension.
2011 marijuana case
2011 saw the reunion of Bigbang from a protracted hiatus, while G-Dragon became involved in a drug case in Japan. G-Dragon tested negative for marijuana in his pee, but a hair test revealed it was there. As the issue became worse, the vocalist of Bang Bang Bang acknowledged that he smoked marijuana but claimed not to have known it was there.
He was charged for postponing enlistment in the military. G-Dragon was charged with misusing his authority to delay his conscription. Legislation in South Korea permits those studying postgraduate studies to defer enrollment for a period of time. G-Dragon was able to delay entering the military between 2009 and 2016 by concentrating on earning his degree.
Shortly after the K-pop sensation enrolled in the military, a prominent K-media source named Dispatch said he was receiving preferential treatment. Despite the evidence that was provided over time, the government disregarded these claims.
G-Dragon’s alleged relationship with Blackpink’s Jennie
On the internet, Blinks and V.I.P. were left indifferent. Every lady, including prominent girl groups, Japanese models, and even a chaebol family’s granddaughter who was spotted with him, was the subject of dating rumors. Nevertheless, G-Dragon has never acknowledged in the open that he is romantically involved with any of them.
Songs of his have sometimes been accused of sounding very similar to other songs, and other songs have been accused of being plagiarized. 2010 saw Sony Music drew attention to the similarities between Flo Rida’s Right Round and G-Dragon’s Heartbreaker. Afterwards, they said that the Butterfly song by the K-pop idol resembled She’s Electric by Oasis.
