Kailash Kher is one of the soulful Sufi singers of Bollywood. He has a unique and amazing voice and style. Born in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh on July 7, 1973, to Mehar Chand and Chandrakanta Kher. Kher’s father was an amateur musician whose performances of traditional folk songs were a regular household event. His father was a Kashmiri Pandit and was also interested in folk songs. But his ancestral family left Kashmir as a result of Hindu genocide.
The further path for Kailash to be a renowned singer was never been easy. He struggled a lot. At the age of 14, he decided to make singing his life but his family was against his decision. At that tender age, Kher left home in search of a guru or an institution to sharp his singing skills. Although he couldn’t find the right guru or a school, Kher started learning music by listening to it.
For living on his own and to have the training, he started attending music classes and would teach the same to students for just Rs.150 per session. He even spent days on the railway platform. The year 1999 was one of the most difficult years for Kailash. His earnings were not sufficient to lead a good life, he went into depression and even attempted to suicide once, at the beginning of the year 1999, when his business saw a setback. He went to Singapore and Thailand and stayed there for six months.
He returned to India with a hop again and shifted to Mumbai from Delhi. There he started living at cheap hostels and doing whatever musical work he could find just to survive. After struggling a lot he met Bollywood musician Ram Sampath who gave him an offer to sing in a TV commercial. After that he got many offers to sing for TV advertisements. Finally, his hard work and passion for music paid him off when he got a chance to sing song Rabba Ishaq Na Howe for film Andaaz which starred Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra.
