Amrita Pritam was a renowned Indian novelist, essayist and poet, who wrote in Punjabi and Hindi. She was born on 31 August 1919, Gujranwala, Pakistan. She is considered the first prominent woman Punjabi poet, novelist, essayist and the leading 20th-century poet of the Punjabi language, who is equally loved on both sides of the India-Pakistan border. Apart from her novels and writings, the other thing that caught attention was her personal life.
She got married to Pritam Singh in 1935 at age 16, an editor to whom she was engaged in early childhood. That’s why she changed her name from amrita Kaur to Amrita Pritam. In 1960, Amrita Pritam left her husband as she is said to have an unrequited affection for poet Sahir Ludhianvi. But with the arrival of another woman in Sahir’s life, Amrita found solace in the companionship of the renowned artist and writer Imroz. She spent the last forty years of her life with Imroz. She died in 2005.
She had two children daughter Kandala, son Navraj Kwatra. Amrita’s son Navraj Kwatra’s death grabbed the media attention as he was found dead in the mysterious circumstances in 2012. The police investigation into the murder of 65 years old Navraj Kwatra took an unexpected turn after the police recovered pornographic CDs from his flat. Some videos and photographs recovered feature upcoming actors and models. Photos of several bar girls were also found.
A photographer by profession he used to live alone in his groundfloor flat in Mumbai. He was strangled to death by two unidentified assailants. CCTVs were installed in the flat’s bedroom and bathroom, condoms (mostly female), Viagra pills and sex toys were also recovered from his place.
Police suspected that he was active in the porn industry. He used to introduce himself as a model coordinator but may have been luring Bollywood aspirants into the porn industry. The police soon cracked his murder case and arrested four people – Kawatra’s young female assistant Savita Gupta (21), her boyfriend Vinay Bose (24), the girl’s 17-year-old brother and Vinay’s friend Gaurank Khawale (21). They murdered him after their plan to extort money from Kawatra backfired.
