It may not be a very friendly sight to find a leopard sitting on the wash basin of the room where you are planning to go to bed.
A couple from Meerut traveling in the beautiful surroundings of Nainital got the biggest shock of their lives when they found a leopard walking around their room early in the morning.
Fortunately, the big cat did not attack the couple and instead, took refuge in the bathroom.
Amit Sah, the owner of the hotel called the police and the forest department who rushed to the hotel.
The big cat smashed the window pane to get into the room as Mr. Sumit Rathore and his wife Ms. Shivani cowered behind the bed to escape its notice. As the animal leisurely walked into the washroom, Mr. Sumit plucked some courage and bolted the door from outside and locked in the big cat and raised an alarm, Ranger Pramod Tiwari said.
A team of forest officials armed with tranquiliser guns and a cage arrived an hour later. But even before the forest officials could get a chance to tranquilise it, the leopard managed to escape.
“This was a young leopard which came to the hotel after being chased by dogs. We tried our best to capture it but failed,” said Tejasvini Arvind Patil, DFO of Nainital.
She said that the leopard was one year old and had rushed back to the jungle where she hoped it would be safe.
While Sumit complained that the windows did not have any grille to keep out wild animals, his wife Shivani, said that although she was terrified of the leopard, she was happy that they could see the animal from such close quarters.
Another guest Rajesh Sijwali who claimed he witnessed the leopard escaping, said he saw the wild cat running towards the mosque in Harinagar area. He said the leopard was being chased by many street dogs.
Earlier this month, a black Himalayan bear was spotted roaming the streets of Nainital in the wee hours. It broke the window pane of a hotel room where some tourists were staying leaving them aghast. After an alarm was raised, it walked down the lanes, descended into the lake and swam across it, before disappearing into the Ayarpatta jungle.
But seriously, this would be a memory for a lifetime for the couples.
