Lionel Messi recently made rounds after he talked about his future and hinted at his retirement plans. Here’s more to know.
Lionel Messi is widely recognized as one of the greatest footballers ever. Over the years he has been breaking numerous records. After winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina in Qatar, many fans called him the undisputed Greatest of All Time (GOAT) in football. Last summer, he left Paris Saint Germain and joined the Major League Soccer team, Inter Miami. Since then, he has scored 25 goals in 29 matches and has been joined by former teammates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba.
However, recent reports say that Messi has now confirmed his retirement and which club he will retire with. Although he is just 36 it’s clear that Messi is nearing the end of his amazing career. According to ESPN Argentina, Messi said that Inter Miami will be his last club. He stated, “Inter Miami will be my last club, yes. As of today, it’s going to be my last one. I love playing football, and I enjoy it even more now because I know there’s less and less time left.”
This comes as a surprise because many people thought Messi would end his career with Newell’s Old Boys, the Argentine club where he started. Back in 2023, El Nacional reported that Messi planned to return to Newell’s Old Boys after his contract with Inter Miami ends in 2025. In March, Messi mentioned that he would retire when he felt he could no longer help his teammates. He said on MBC’s Big Time Podcast, according to ESPN, “I know the moment will come when I’m not performing well, not enjoying myself, and not helping my teammates.”
