A tribal man, along with his 12-year-old daughter, walked almost 10 km carrying his wife’s dead body on his shoulder on Wednesday as he was denied to get a vehicle or ambulance from the government hospital where his wife lost her life.
Majhi begged to the hospital authorities for a vehicle to transport her wife’s body but every thing went in vain. The distressing video shows Majhi struggling with the body whereas his daughter is sobbing walking beside his father.
“I told the hospital authorities that I am a poor man and cannot afford a vehicle. Despite repeated requests, they said they cannot offer any help,” Majhi told a local television channel.
Dana Majhi’s 42-year-old wife Amang Dei died because of tuberculosis on Tuesday night at the district headquarters hospital at Bhawanipatna.
The Naveen Patnaik government had earlier launched the `Mahaparayana’ scheme in February, which offers free transportation of bodies from government hospitals to the residences of the deceased.
However, Majhi said despite his efforts, he could not get any help from the hospital authorities.
So he wrapped his wife’s body in a cloth and started walking to his village Melghara which is about 60 km from Bhawanipatna.
Majhi’s daughter accompanied him till some local reporters spotted the duo. They called up the district collector and arranged for an ambulance to take the body for the remaining 50 km.
Kalahandi district collector Brunda D said, “As we got to know of the incident, we spoke to the CDMO and arranged for an ambulance” he said. Under `Mahaparayana’ scheme, dead body carriers are supposed to be deployed at 37 government hospitals.
It feels very sad to come across such stories despite the fact that such a big country as India fails to govern properly though crores of rupees are budgeted for development of rural areas. It looks like those promises of rural development are limited to just paper and pamphlets for a better election campaigning propaganda. The government must be more sensitive towards the development and betterment of the people of the country as it is their duty. They are not elected just for taking world tours and making public appearances with fake promises. When will the time come when a government will not fail its people ?
