Masaba Gupta who carved a niche for herself in the fashion designer recounts that she is following the steps of her mother Neena Gupta who is invincibly pursuing her acting career at 60. She adds that how her mother’s body of work in television and film encouraged her to join showbiz.
Masaba recounts that how Neena Gupta was told that she is not meant for leading roles if she signed for Kundan Shah’s Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. Neena played the role of Pankaj Kapur’s secretary Priya in the comedy film co-starring Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Om Puri, and Satish Shah.
During a roundtable discussion with Pinkvilla, Masaba shared, “Mom was telling me that when she said yes to Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, everyone told her, ‘If you do this role of this funny girl, you will never be a lead actress’. And it was true! I think Badhaai Ho is her first lead role. At the age of 60.”
She adds, “Yeah I would. I would do it because there’s so much I want to do and I just feel like there are many numbers I might not have.”
She further continued that since Neena lived earlier in Delhi people might forget her. In 2017, she made an Instagram post stating that she is open to good roles and added that she is now in Mumbai.
Masaba and Neena were seen together in Netflix special web series Masaba Masaba helmed by Sonam Nair.
