Master Of Puppets, Metallica’s third studio album and one of the most important of his career, celebrated its 35th anniversary on March 3. The quartet formed at that time by James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Cliff Burton, who died just 5 months after the album’s release, and Lars Ulrich recorded this authentic gem of thrash metal in September and December 1985 which automatically obtained top reviews and the the best positions in the ranking of the best-selling albums of the time.
It is obvious that this formidable album deserves a celebration. And how could it be otherwise, below we bring you a selection of the most popular, acclaimed and important songs from this great album.
Welcome home (sanatorium)
A dark song, like many from this album and from Metallica’s career in general. The fourth track of the album offers us a powerful chorus and a sharp solo, typical of Kirk Hammet. It certainly couldn’t be missing from this list-
Puppeteer
Without a doubt the best song on the album and one of the best of Metallica’s career. The song that gives the album its name undoubtedly left its mark on many generations who, influenced by the aggressive and compact sound of Metallica, made this song a true anthem. There’s no need to mention the song’s catchy riff and solos, which are arguably some of the best in metal history.
Orion
Almost nine minutes of pure instrumentality. Squeaky guitars, aggressive drums, ups and downs in the rhythm, in short, the album summed up in one song. It is worth saying that this is the only song on the album that is entirely instrumental, which makes it possible to appreciate the musical cohesion between all its members beyond the powerful vocals and the lyrics of Heatfield.
Damages Inc.
A master class on how to close a record. Pure aggressiveness, fury on every guitar, every drum roll, every verse sung, “the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse” could not have composed a better song to close one of the most important albums of his career.
