Met Gala 2024 preparation has started. Like every year the event will showcase the biggest stars coming together from the worlds of fashion, film, politics, and sports, all handpicked by Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour.
The Met Gala tradition will continue next year with the event being set for May 6, 2024, the first Monday of May. The public can enjoy the exhibit from May 10 to September 2. The theme for Met Gala 2024 has been announced, and it’s going to be “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” The Metropolitan Museum of Art made this theme announcement on a Wednesday.
The upcoming event will be a grand display of approximately 250 garments and accessories spanning four centuries. The pieces are drawn from the Costume Institute’s vast archives containing a staggering 33,000 items. Among the exquisite collection, you’ll find everything from a 17th-century embroidered jacket to a stunning Alexander McQueen gown from the spring-summer 2001 collection, bejeweled with shells. Visitors will enter the room resembling a laboratory featuring a magnificent silk satin House of Worth ball gown from the late 19th century. Even though it’s old this 1887 dress, adorned with embroidery, beads, and sequins, still looks vibrant. However, it’s too delicate to be displayed on a mannequin, so it will be presented flat, and beautifully restored to its original glory through computer imaging and the use of a hologram.
The Costume Institute curator, Andrew Bolton, explained that once items are in the museum’s collection, they can’t be worn. This is where the magic of computer imaging and holograms comes into action. For this special event, the museum teamed up with TikTok, a Chinese-owned platform known for its wide accessibility. With the aim global audience with the exhibition. The Met Gala is a primary funding source of the Costume Institute, under the guidance of Anna Wintour to become one of the most coveted fashion events worldwide.
