We all believe that power naps increase our capability and efficiency in work. To our surprise some countries allow their citizens to take power naps while working. But if you think you can compensate the loss of your sleep with a single power nap then you are wrong here. No power nap can take the place of your night’s sleep. But yes it can improve performance, alertness, concentration, and judgment.
Power Nap Research Proof
NASA’s scientists conducted studies on astronauts and they discovered that a 25-minute power nap increased their judgment rate by 35%. And to our surprise, the same 25-minute power nap increased their vigilance rate by 16%.
Napping Vs Coffee
Everyone has their own beliefs about coffee and napping. But we believe in facts because facts don’t lie. A study claimed that people who took 15 to 20 mins nap woke up with more awareness than the people who drank 150 mg of caffeine.
How Does Napping Work?
Whenever we take short naps our brain gets a golden opportunity to take a break and this is the very part of the brain that is always working. This is something similar to fatigued muscles rejuvenating during shorter breaths.
A new study claimed that 10-minutes power nap is the most effective one. But there are scientists that claim that 30-minutes power nap is the best. But one thing is for sure that power naps where you sleep for more than 30 minutes can turn into opposite of productive. In simple words taking a power nap for more than 30 minutes becomes counter productive, so if you are thinking about it—- Just stop! This may be a very bad idea and will affect your efficiency in a negative manner.
If we slept for more than 30 mins then we would wake up feeling more tired than ever. this condition is called sleep inertia. Sleep inertia occurs when you wake up in the middle of the night and that is when our body starts feeling tired because it is a signal to the brain to go back to sleep again.
So, in short, we would just like to conclude that excess of everything is bad. Taking longer power naps can actually affect your brain in a negative manner making you feel lazy and tired. So, it’s better if you don’t take naps longer than 30-minutes of time.
